Pre-presentation setup
Lock down your environment before going live so you can stay focused on delivery.
System preparation
- Close distraction-heavy apps (Slack, Skype, Teams) and enable Focus Assist.
- Hide desktop icons and consider auto-hiding the taskbar (or crop it from your capture area).
- Review your desktop wallpaper to ensure it is appropriate. Even when displaying full screen apps, it is very easy to expose it when interacting with the Windows taskbar.
- Hide browser bookmarks bar (Ctrl+Shift+B).
- Share a secondary screen instead of primary; notifications usually appear on the primary display.
- Consider setting up a dedicated virtual desktop for presenting. This can be more essential when sharing full screen content like a Power Point.
- Ensure at least a single output stream resolution at or below 1080p for compatibility.
- Check Windows Updates and reboot if needed.
- See Content preparation for theme, font, and material readiness guidance.
Audio and testing
- Mute speakers or use headphones to prevent feedback.
- Test your microphone before starting.
Lighting
- If you wear glasses be aware of the reflection (specifically for ring lights), this will often require moving the ring light higher so the reflection does bounce directly into the camera.
- There are plenty of online guides for doing lighting. In general, check for shadows when moving your face between looking at the camera and looking at the screen.
Utilities to launch
