Live coding guidelines
Keep your stream stable and your audience engaged.
Setup
- Avoid Wi-Fi—always hard line when possible. Wi-Fi is rarely stable enough even when it is fast enough.
- Use a countdown timer for stream starts (e.g., LiveFile). Stream starting notifications can be slow and gives an opportunity for people to join. A 5-10 minute countdown is typical.
- Confirm titles and categories on every platform before going live.
- Remember that videos may not stream smoothly on some meeting platforms.
Content and engagement
Think out loud—share your problem-solving process.
Be verbose in explanations to keep everyone with you.
Prioritize engagement; conversations and questions should be engaged with. If there are off-topic things come up, simply address them as such.
As much as possible have your face on the screen. This improves engagements and provides a sense of connection.
Look into the camera when replying to questions or engaging with viewers.
Position the camera as close to the screen you will be looking at.
Engagement over finishing every demo.
